Plan intranet (planet)

Building on our work on Plan's suite of external facing websites and our knowledge of the organisation, we were re-commissioned to re-design "planet", Plan's global intranet and the main information resource for 8000 plan staff across 66 countries worldwide.

The vision for the new intranet is for it to become a one stop shop for resources, information and collaboration worldwide - bringing people together in the same environment which can be personalised to their needs, allow them to communicate with each other and enable them to find and share information effectively.

To meet this vision, our focus for the project was on developing a highly useable front end interface design. As such, the project began with an extensive requirements gathering process where we worked with internal stakeholders to understand the unique needs of all areas of the organisation. This led to the development of a content architecture for the intranet and defined the approach to personalisation and staff collaboration.

The creative design then followed, with a strong steer from the project team to develop a look and feel that was distinct from the external facing websites to give clarity between the internal and external online resources for staff across the organisation. Our iterative design process developed a new online visual identity for "planet" with a carefully considered colour pallette employed to help user orientation across the different sections of the site and clear iconography to assist navigation through the different functional components of the site - especially useful for users whose native tongue is not English.

Our front end design was then delivered on the Sharepoint platform by an implementation team from Sword Group.

We have had great feedback from staff since the launch. They love the new designs - finding them clean, simple and visually appealing. The new structure also provides a much more streamlined route to the information they need. The whole site now offers a clear internal brand and gives a real sense of the global organisation.
